Common Questions

Here are some questions that are frequently asked by girls thinking about auditioning for the Girl Choir:

What is the audition process like?

The audition process is described in detail at this link. While your chorister auditions, other choristers, parents, volunteers, and staff members will be available to answer any questions you may have.

Do I need to prepare for the audition?

Not at all! All girls are welcome to audition regardless of their past musical experience or ability. We provide a music education program that is suited to girls at a variety of skill levels, and we regularly find places in our program for beginners and experienced singers alike. But if you do have a piece of music prepared to perform, you are welcome to do so during audition.

How much does your program cost?

The cost of the program varies depending upon the choir level:

  • Primes Choir -- $395
  • Apprentice Choir -- $495
  • Lyric Choir -- $785
  • Concert Choir -- $895
  • Chamber Singers -- $995

In addition, there is a $50 registration fee for all choirs as well as a $25 uniform rental fee.

When does your program begin and end?

Our program runs concurrently with the school year. Registration and rehearsals begin during the second week of classes according to the Broward County Schools calendar, typically in mid-to-late August, and they continue through the end of May. Major concerts are presented in mid-December and mid-May with smaller public and private events throughout the season. Our last major event is our Awards Ceremony at the end of May. Additionally, some groups go on tour in the spring or summer. For specific dates, check out our complete master calendar.

Where and when do you rehearse?

Our rehearsal schedule and locations are found in our Membership Handbook.

What are the qualifications of your artistic staff?

Our artistic staff has decades of professional award-winning educational expertise. Read more about their skills and experience on our artistic staff bio page.

How does your education program compare with school music programs?

Our after-school rehearsal schedule is structured to accommodate choristers from across the region -- including those choristers whose schools do not have music programs. Our artistic staff is made up of educators with years of public and private classroom experience. Plus, our music education program meets or exceeds all of the requirements of the Florida Department of Education’s Sunshine State Standards for Arts: Music.

What sort of music do you sing?

Our girls sing choral music from traditions throughout history and around the world. Our music ranges from ancient to modern, sacred to secular, popular to classical, and folk to Broadway. The literature selected by our artistic staff is designed both to increase the skill level of the singers as well as to expose choristers to a diverse array of world cultures and beliefs. You can read more about our repertoire on our Performances page.

In what sorts of places do you perform?

We perform at a variety of venues in concerts we produce as well as for events throughout South Florida. You can read a synopsis of our performance program on our history page, or you can browse through a list of all of our past performances.

Can you tell me more about the history of your program?

You can read about the history of the Girl Choir on our history page.

Are you affiliated with a church or school?

No, we are a completely independent community choir. We are a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. We perform music that spans many cultures and beliefs, both secular and sacred.
