Our New Chorus Manager: Altovise Laster

Posted by:

Altovise LasterAs you know, Wendy Boucher has resigned as the Executive Director of the Girl Choir due to health concerns. In the year she held the position, she was instrumental in stabilizing our business practices, increasing our fundraising capability, and preparing us for the move into our very own administrative and rehearsal facility. All of us here at the Girl Choir are extremely grateful for her service to the organization.

The Board of Trustees decided to expand the role of Executive Director into several positions, including a Chorus Manager. We created a search committee which interviewed many qualified applicants. I am happy to report that the committee unanimously recommended Altovise Laster for the position of Chorus Manager. She has accepted our offer, and her first day with us is Monday, October 3, 2011.

Ms. Laster holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Theater Performance from Florida International University as well as a Master of Science Degree in Special Education from the City College of New York. She has taught classes in acting, dance, humanities, special education, literature, and film.

In her most recent position, she served as Teen Leader Coordinator of Girls Quest in Wyndham, New York – an organization that nurtures girls to help them achieve their full potential and become active members of their communities by building academic and social competence. In that role, she developed a leadership curriculum for teens, coordinated daily activities of program participants, and supervised and evaluated program leaders.

As our Chorus Manager, Ms. Laster is responsible for the administrative aspects of the Girl Choir. She will work closely with the Board of Trustees, the Artistic Director, and all of our staff members and volunteers. Please join me in welcoming Ms. Laster to the Girl Choir family.

Regards,

Tate Garrett, Chairman of the Board of Trustees
The Girl Choir of South Florida

Welcome Back … and Welcome Home!

Welcome to our 2011-2012 season, and welcome to our new home!  I know I speak not just for myself, but for our staff, volunteers, and especially the girls, when I say how grateful I am that we finally have a place to call our own.  Imagine-rehearsal space, music, theory, equipment, uniforms, paperwork, office supplies…the list goes on and on…all under one roof!  Thanks to the help of numerous volunteers (a BIG thank you to all of the parents and choristers who donated equipment, furniture, supplies and lots of time and effort!), we are settled in and our season is off to a successful start.

We have many exciting events planned this season.  The Concert Choir kick-off social is Saturday, September 10th, our open house for parents and friends is Saturday, September 24th (come hear a preview of the Chamber Singers fall repertoire, and get to know the girlchoir community!), followed by our annual GCSF family picnic on October 1st.  Both our winter and spring concerts will be at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts this year. The Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will also be presenting classical choral programs at All Saints Episcopal in downtown Ft. Lauderdale,  and for the first time, will be singing with The Symphony of the Americas and the Florida’s Singing Sons Boychoir. Make sure to check our online calendar often for these and other important dates!

I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to sing with your talented girls each week-thank you for being a part of the GCSF this season!

Whaddyat b’ys?

Hello, Girl Choir families!  We’ve just returned from Festival 500 in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and I’m having a difficult time finding the words to describe our experience, but here goes…

We (24 Concert Choir girls, 4 outstanding choir moms, our Executive Director Mrs. Boucher, and I) spent 10 days singing, talking, attending workshops, and listening to some of the finest choirs in the world.

We worked with British composer and former Kings Singer Bob Chilcott, and Finnish conductor Kari Ala-Pöllänen; we attended workshops led by experts from Sweden, Russia, Canada, Finland, Indonesia, and South Africa; we attended four performances and heard fifteen choirs; and we sang with the world-renowned vocal ensemble Rajaton (check them out on YouTube!).

Along with the mass choir performance in the Mile One Centre, where over 800 singers performed, with 4000-plus audience members in attendance, we also sang two thirty-minute programs of our own, one of which was the World of Music Concert with Mississauga Children’s Choir and the Holy Heart of Mary Alumnae Choir.

Not only did we share a stage with these wonderful people, we discovered that when it comes to singing together, it doesn’t make a bit of difference where you’re from or how old (or young) you are – it’s the common understanding of this sometimes difficult, sometimes crazy, but always meaningful thing we call “choir”.

While I’m extremely proud of the girls’ premiere on the world stage, the thing I keep coming back to as I reflect on our time together is the bond we all share.  I miss our girls already!  How grateful – and lucky! – I am to have a group of intelligent, sensitive, creative, kind young women to share music – and my life – with.

I hope all of you enjoy the next few weeks of summer (I’d remind you to keep singing, but of course you will!), and I look forward to hearing you in our new space – our own home – next month!

Tonight, I had my breath stolen from me in the most literal sense of the word. To see, to be a part of, to have the chance to witness such an event was a huge honor, greater than anything that I’ve been given the chance to be a part of in my life.

A Half-Decade of Singing Together

“Where words fail, music speaks.”
Hans Christian Andersen

I recently spent an afternoon reviewing our past programs, and I was struck by two things: one, the enormous growth that our choir has experienced in five short years; and two, the multitude of familiar names that have graced each of our programs since the first Winter Concert in 2005.

It’s choir season again–happy “new year”!   I’d like to extend warm greetings to our returning members, and a hearty welcome to our new members.  I know I speak for Mrs. Fasulo as well as myself when I say that we are honored to have such an outstanding group of young musicians to work with this year.
