Instruction During our regular rehearsals, our choristers receive instruction on proper vocal technique, including posture, breath support, diction, and other elements of singing. Sight-singing and ear-training exercises complement other skills learned during rehearsal.
We also provide a multi-level music theory program that teaches music literacy skills. Our theory program complements the vocal instruction received during rehearsal. Choristers may work at their own pace and are given graded exams at the completion of each level to demonstrate proficiency. Choreography and movement skills are also taught. Choristers learn how to expressively perform dance steps while maintaining proper singing and projection technique. Performance Our season is divided into fall and spring semesters. At the end of each semester, all of our choirs will perform in a series of public concert events. Our concert programs aim not only to build the skills and experience of our choristers, but also to develop cultural awareness and sensitivity in our audiences.
Each summer, our Concert Choir goes on tour, participating in choral workshops or visiting important cultural locations. Our summer tours provide our choristers with the opportunity to bring their music to other parts of the world and to learn more about the world around them. Citizenship Community outreach events are an important part of our program. Each semester, we schedule one or more events which bring our music to individuals whose mobility is limited, such as hospital patients and nursing home residents. Additionally, our choirs are regularly invited to provide music for civic, educational, cultural, and other professional events.
CharacterThe Girl Choir not only wants its members to become better singers, but also to become better people. We provide a positive environment in which girls are challenged to be their best and in which they feel rewarded in their achievements. At the end of each season, we hold an Awards Ceremony to recognize the accomplishments of our members and our volunteers. Our Chorus Proctor program is designed to develop musicianship, leadership, and character in ways that extend beyond singing. Through this self-directed program, girls are motivated to learn more about history, to broaden their contemporary musical experiences, and to use their natural talents to give back to the organization.
