Published in the Miami Herald Girl Choir of South Florida schedules auditions AS THE GIRL CHOIR ENDS ITS SEASON, IT'S GEARING UP FOR THE COMING ONE WITH AUDITIONS Posted on Sun, May 25, 2008 Special to The Miami Herald BY BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL With their voices raised in unison, The Girl Choir of South Florida ended its spring concert series with a few ribbits, combined with a couple of moos, quacks, meows and a cock-a-doodle-doo. The unusual notes, mixed with feline dance moves and painted-on cat whiskers, were actually quite appropriate, given the theme, All Creatures Great and Small. The young ladies entertained crowds with a multilingual program devoted entirely to critters, ranging from Mexican and German folk ballads to a Broadway medley of music from -- what else? -- Cats. |

Published in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel I Care I Cure ... I Run 5K race helps children's cancer research Race proceeds to go to cancer research By Marcia Freidenreich Special Correspondent April 27, 2008 To celebrate what would have been their son's 13th birthday on Feb. 3, Beth and Brad Besner took part in the first I Care I Cure ... I Run 5K Race at Markham Park in Sunrise. They were thrilled that 1,283 people showed up to walk or run with them. After their son Ian died in May 2006 from complications related to treatments for leukemia, the Davie couple started the I Care I Cure foundation in his honor. Its mission is to raise money and awareness about cancer treatments for childhood cancers so that the treatment of the diseases will be gentler and more tolerable for children and their families. |

Published in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel Girl Choir Learns Power of Their Music At Atlanta hospital, their voices brought happiness to children's faces By Marcia Freidenreich Special Correspondent September 23, 2007 The Girl Choir of South Florida earned rave reviews from Atlanta audiences at The High Museum, Underground Atlanta and an inner-city children's hospital. Wallis Peterson, the choir's director and Oakland Park resident, founded the group in 2005. "When I came to South Florida, I worked with the Florida Singing Sons Boychoir, but I noticed there weren't any groups for girls," she said. "My memories of being in chorus and now with the girls' choir are of camaraderie that develops and the emotions you share. When everyone sings their part and lifts their voices, converting a song that was previously notes on a page into a living, breathing piece of music, it's like a painter with his brush and canvas creating an original painting." |
